Foreword
     This online fact book has been compiled for the purpose of providing a convenient and authoritative source of factual information concerning various aspects of the University of Central Florida from Summer 2004 through Spring 2005. A member institution of the Florida Board of Education, UCF was formerly Florida Technological University. The name was changed by action of the Florida Legislature on December 6, 1978.

     This online fact book is prepared in the office of Institutional Research, reporting to the office of Planning & Evaluation, a Division of Academic Affairs. Those people interested in a further breakdown of information contained in this online fact book can possibly obtain such a breakdown by referring their questions to the office of Institutional Research. All data reported in this online fact book was based on current reports. Any modifications at a later date to any reports used to provide these data might reflect different numbers. Date Established: June, 1963

Florida Tech officially began on June 10,1963, when the State Legislature passed Bill No. 125 and Governor Farris Bryant signed it into law: 'An ACT authorizing the state board of education to establish a state university or a branch of an existing state university in the east central part of Florida; defining the area; authorizing the board of control and the state board of education to determine the exact location; providing an effective date.' The act, which took effect July 1, 1963, defined east central Florida as including the counties of Flagler, Orange, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, Volusia, Osceola, Indian River and St. Lucie.*

The University of Central Florida, a member institution of the State University System, formerly was named Florida Technological University. The name was changed by action of the Florida Legislature on December 6, 1978.
